What Is My Eyebrow Shape?

What Is My Eyebrow Shape?

How to Find the Right Brow Stencil for Your Face

Many people ask the same question when they start working on their brows.

What shape are my eyebrows supposed to be?

Your natural brow shape is determined by the structure of your brow bone, the placement of your eyes, and the direction your brow hairs grow. Even if your brows have become sparse or lighter over time, the original shape is usually still there. It just needs a little help revealing itself.

As a makeup artist with more than 20 years of experience working with clients and editorial beauty, one of the most common things I see is people guessing their brow shape rather than following their natural structure.

Once the correct shape is established, everything becomes much easier.

The Three Most Common Eyebrow Shapes

Most brows fall into three general shape categories. Understanding which one is closest to your natural brow can make choosing the right stencil much simpler.

Classic Arch

The Classic Arch is the most universal brow shape.

This stencil is slightly larger than the other two and follows a very natural progression. The front of the brow graduates softly into a gentle arch and then tapers toward the tail.

It creates a balanced shape that lifts the face while still looking soft and natural.

Medium Arch

The Medium Arch is a slightly smaller version of the Classic shape.

It follows the same graceful structure but is scaled down a bit. This shape works beautifully on smaller faces that suit a more refined or moderate brow.

Many people find this shape ideal when they want definition without the brow becoming too dominant.

Straight Brow

The Straight Brow is designed for brows that appear more horizontal than arched.

The shape stays relatively straight across the brow bone with minimal lift. This type of brow is often seen when the brow sits slightly lower on the forehead and there is less space between the eyebrow and the eye.

Think of brows like Miranda Lambert or Natalie Portman. Their brows sit a little lower and maintain a straighter line across the face.

A Small Detail That Makes a Big Difference

Across all three shapes, there is one important design detail.

The tail of the brow sits approximately one millimetre higher than the base of the front of the brow. This subtle elevation creates a gentle lift to both the brow and the eye area.

The result is a face that appears more open and refreshed without the brow looking overly arched or exaggerated.

Small details like this are often what make the difference between brows that look natural and brows that look drawn on.

Why Many People Struggle With Brow Shape

For many people, the real challenge is not filling in the brow. The challenge is knowing where the brow should actually sit on the face.

When brows become lighter or sparse, the natural guide disappears. This is when people start guessing and the brow can end up too high, too long, or uneven.

If your brows have become lighter or seem to be disappearing over time, you may find it helpful to read my article on why eyebrows thin or fade and what you can do about it, which explains the most common reasons brows become sparse.

Understanding why brows change over time often makes it easier to restore their natural structure.

A Simple Way to Find Your Best Brow Shape

One of the easiest ways to restore structure to the brows is to start with shape first.

The Jenn of Arch Bold Brow Duo was designed with this in mind. The biodegradable stencil helps you position the brow correctly according to your natural bone structure. From there, Arch Filler, a soft water resistant powder, gently fills in areas where hair may be lighter or sparse.

The goal is not to create a new brow. The goal is to reveal the brow that already belongs to your face.

If you would like to see how the system works, you can explore it here:

If your brows are very light or difficult to see, you may also find it helpful to read my guide on how to bring invisible brows back to life, which walks through simple ways to restore shape and definition.

The Right Brow Shape Should Look Effortless

When the stencil shape aligns with your natural brow bone, the result feels effortless.
The brows appear lifted, balanced, and naturally in proportion with your features. They frame the eyes beautifully without becoming the focal point of the face.

The best brows are not the ones that follow a trend.
They are the ones that still look like your brows — just a little more defined.

If you’re ready to find the shape that works with your face, explore the Bold Brow Duo and discover how the right stencil and Arch Filler can make your brows look naturally lifted and beautifully balanced.
