How to Choose the Most Natural Brow Colour for Your Hair and Skin Tone
One of the most common questions I hear from clients is this.
Should my brows match my hair?
The short answer is no. In most cases the most flattering brows do not match the lightest colour in your hair. Instead, they reflect a slightly deeper tone found within it.
As a makeup artist with more than 20 years of experience working with clients and editorial beauty, choosing the correct brow colour is one of the simplest ways to bring balance and structure back to the face.
When the colour is right, the entire face looks more defined and alive.
Why Brows Should Be Slightly Deeper Than Your Hair
If your hair contains highlights and lowlights, the brows usually look best when they follow the lowest light. This means choosing a shade that is slightly deeper than the lightest strands in the hair. Most of the time, this shade can be found at the nape of the neck.
This creates dimension in the face.
When brows match the lightest colour in the hair exactly, they can disappear. A little more depth gives the brows presence and helps frame the eyes.
Think of brows as the frame of the face. A small amount of contrast brings definition without making the brows look heavy or drawn on.
Choosing the Right Brow Colour for Grey or White Hair
As hair becomes lighter over time, many people are unsure what brow colour will look most natural.
White Hair and Fair Skin
For those with white hair and fair skin, brows tend to look most natural in a soft silver grey tone. This provides gentle definition without overpowering delicate colouring.
The goal is to create a subtle frame for the eyes while keeping the overall look soft.
Grey Hair and Medium Skin Tones
For someone with grey hair and a medium skin tone, a smoke shade often works better.
Smoke tones contain slightly more depth and warmth, which prevents the brows from looking washed out against the skin.
This small adjustment helps restore balance to the face.
Avoid Blue Based Grey Brow Colours
One important detail many people overlook is the undertone of grey brow products.
Grey shades should never contain blue.
Blue based greys can look artificial on the skin and rarely blend naturally with hair. The most natural brow shades lean neutral or slightly smoky. These tones blend beautifully with the hair while still giving the brows enough presence to frame the face.
Shape and Colour Work Together
Colour alone does not create a natural looking brow. Shape and placement matter just as much.

When the structure of the brow is correct, the colour simply enhances what is already there.
A Simple Way to Add Natural Brow Colour
When brows become lighter or sparse, adding soft colour can restore depth and definition.
The Jenn of Arch Bold Brow Duo was designed for this exact situation. The biodegradable stencil helps position the brow correctly, and Arch Filler, a soft water resistant powder, gently adds colour so the brows look fuller while still appearing natural.
The goal is not to create heavy brows. The goal is to restore the subtle structure that frames the eyes.

The Right Brow Colour Should Look Effortless
When the colour is chosen well, brows do not stand out on their own.
They simply make the entire face look more balanced, more defined, and more alive.
